Disability Cycling

Paul and Stephen Cassidy of Emyvale CC took the opportunity last year to participate in a Disability in Sport Awareness Course organised by the Monaghan Sports Partnership. This group are very proactive in the Monaghan area and provide training and courses in a wide range of topics. Both men were so fired with enthusiasm following the course that they decided to become actively involved in working with Disability groups and lending their knowledge of cycling to promote healthy living styles. The began working this year with the Truagh Special Needs group providing cycling activities for people with special needs.

Paul Cassidy said, “The uptake has been fantastic and everyone loves it. There are members of the group who don’t participate in other activities but who really enjoy the cycling. We have turbo trainers and tricycles for use and we carry out simple skills programmes in the hall. It is great craic and both Barry and I love helping out. We get so much out of it ourselves when we see the enjoyment on everyone’s faces. Currently we are raising money to buy some additional bikes which we can use and then we may be able to extend the programme.”

Monaghan Sports Partnership would like to congratulate Emyvale Cycling Club and in particular, Paul and Stephen Cassidy for their vision and hard work in proving inclusive activities to the people of the area with special needs.
