CAWT ‘Up for It’ Healthy Families Project

Monaghan Sports Partnership is delighted to be associated with the innovative project for creating healthier families in Monaghan and Cavan.

The Border Counties Childcare Network (BCCN) and the HSE Dublin North East (HSE DNE) successfully tendered to deliver the Up4It! Cavan/Monaghan Families Getting Healthy Together Project in the Cavan/Monaghan area.

Following the successful tender a Project Board was established, comprising representatives of a number of bodies from both the voluntary and statutory sector.  This board meets on a regular basis to progress and manage the development plans for the project.

This project has been made possible with funding secured from the European Union’s INTERREG IVA programme by Co-operation and Working Together (CAWT), the cross border health services partnership. The CAWT Obesity project (Up4It!) is 3 and half years in duration and is part of CAWT’s ‘Putting Patients, Clients and Families First’ EU funded initiative.

Why provide the UP4It! Project and who is involved

The National Survey of Health and Lifestyle in Ireland identified that 25% (1 in 4) of Irish children are overweight of which 7% are obese (SLÁN, 2007).

Therefore, to address this at a local level the Border Counties Childcare Network (BCCN) successfully tendered to deliver the Up4It! Cavan/Monaghan Families Getting Healthy Together Project in the Cavan/Monaghan area.  This project has been made possible with funding secured from the European Union’s INTERREG IVA programme by Co-operation and Working Together (CAWT), the cross border health services partnership. The CAWT Obesity project (Up4It!) is 3 and half years in duration and is part of CAWT ‘Putting Patients, Clients and Families First’ EU funded initiative.  In partnership with the Border Counties Childcare Network a number of other statutory and voluntary bodies have collaborated in the development of ‘Up4It! Cavan/Monaghan Families Getting Healthy Together’ which is a fun, family focused healthy lifestyle project.

Along with the BCCN and HSE DNE, other agencies involved in the project are: Cavan & Monaghan County Childcare Committees (CCC), Cavan RAPID, Enable Ireland, Monaghan Education Centre, Monaghan & Cavan Sports Partnerships, Breffni Integrated and Monaghan Integrated Development. The Project Management has recently appointed a Project Coordinator Colette Quigley to support the role out of the project.

What does the UP4It! Project entail?

The project will provide two multi-component programmes that have been developed by Health Professionals with expertise in Nutrition/Dietetics, Physical Activity, Psychology and Wellbeing. The prevention programme targets parents with children aged O-5yrs. The management programme targets parents with overweight children aged 8-11years of age. Both programmes aim to support families in making healthier lifestyle choices so as to avoid/reduce the incidence of long term chronic diseases i.e. obesity, diabetes and heart disease in our children’s future.  The programmes will be delivered in four areas within counties Cavan and Monaghan.

The project will be officially launched and supported by a two day Inter-Agency Cross Border Health and Wellbeing Conference ‘Well in your skin’ beginning on the 30th September 2011.

Information flyers and posters have been distributed to all primary schools, pre-schools and early years’ services, GP surgeries and Primary Care Teams local health centres, local libraries, family resource and community centres covering the two counties.  If they wish to take part or to get more information on either programme parents can contact their local health centre or GP surgery for referral to the programmes.

Parents/Guardians are encouraged to contact the Project Coordinator Colette Quigley on 086-7307304 if they wish to take part.
